Chapter Nine

The museum had a towering stucco wall topped with a black wrought iron fence running its length. As they walked along next to it, the hairs on the back of Sage’s neck stood on end. She could’ve sworn they were being watched.

She took a quick peek over her shoulder. A flash out of the corner of her eye had her muscles tensing, until she heard the meow of a cat. Geez. They were being stalked by a cat, and she was freaking out. She shook her head and rolled her shoulders, trying to make the creepy sensations go away, but it didn’t work. She glanced across the street, looking for anything that would put her mind to rest, but there was no one. Anywhere. No tourists wandering around, no locals, much less anyone she recognized from the ship. Well, it was siesta time…

The scuff of a shoe that wasn’t hers or Dace’s, convinced her someone was there, so she checked over her other shoulder. Nothing. She wondered how Dace could be walking along next her not noticing any of it. He was the detective here. Why wasn’t he detecting?

She looked up at him and his expression told her nothing and his relaxed body language screamed carefree tourist taking in the sights. His hands shoved in his pockets, baseball cap pushed back on his head, sunglasses in place. The only thing missing from the picture of complete nonchalance was whistling under his breath.

Was this investigation making her paranoid now? Sensing danger when nothing pointed to it. She sighed in disgust. She shouldn’t be worried. She was trained to handle herself in dangerous medical situations. Plus, she was with an experienced police officer who’d faced more danger and came out intact, than she ever had or ever would.

By the time they reached the entrance to the museum, where the wall was higher and had bricks imbedded in it to form an arch over the wrought iron gate of the entryway, the pep talk hadn’t helped. She couldn’t shake the feeling someone was watching them, and couldn’t convince herself it was because of Belize City’s reputation. She’d visited it numerous times and never worried about danger. Maybe it was because there was no one around so she felt like they were on their own if anything went wrong. The security guard standing on the sidewalk at the entrance to the museum eased her fear and she felt her muscles relax when she saw him.

Inside the coolness of the building, surrounded by artifacts from ancient peoples and civilizations, she gained perspective, as well as her calm. The world was so much bigger than her and the things she was dealing with right now. She savored the opportunity to escape it all here. In the company of a man like Dace. For the first time in far too many years, she let everything go and enjoyed an afternoon with a man she was attracted to on a variety of levels. And if her instincts were to be believed—though she’d been questioning them lately—he was enjoying it too.
